Before you get naked with your would-be partner, have a conversation about STIs and contraception. Go and get blood tests for STIs and Herpes (which is a separate test). Then exchange test results. If you both are negative, then you can have sex without fear of catching a STI. Always use condoms if not already protected by another reliable method like The Pill, an IUD or an Implant. This method precludes hooking up and one night stands. Sorry about that.
