Is it possible to catch STDs even by having sex with someone without?

This is an evergreen question asked on Quora often, and I shake my head and weep for the sad state of sex education every time it's asked. No. You can not get an STI from someone who does not have an STI. Sexually transmitted infections are caused by pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. These are organisms that do not spontaneously pop into existence when you have sex. If you have sex with 10,000 partners, and none of them has an STI, you will not get an STI. If you go camping in a place where there are no bears, you will not get eaten by a bear. Bears and pathogens can not materialize from thin air. In an ideal world, this would be basic information every child was taught.
